What to Do

The past two weeks, I’ve been organizing the company’s products. Sometimes everything’s clear; other times, I’m completely lost. There’s just so much to change and improve. But the big picture is what it is, and personal thoughts and actions feel so small compared to the broader situation. Often, a question pops up: Do I really have the power to change anything?

This morning, I saw a year-end special from NetEase. It was really moving. Suddenly, it hit me that our country is like a failing company. It’s decayed, old, unfair, and the company culture promotes “profit” above all else — everything comes down to money. In this company, many employees’ contributions don’t match what they get in return. Many are dissatisfied, many complain. Some are just happy to get their paycheck at month-end. Some have great ideas, along with many who actively try to make a difference.

But the situation is so dire. It’s huge — huge enough to crush anyone just trying to stand up and do something. Huge enough that the employees with ideas eventually consider giving up.

But who’s going to address these issues?

Someone has got to do it, whether it’s a company or a country.

The images were shared from: What You Haven’t Seen in 2009. Seeing these photos and the final list of photographers made it very clear to me what an artist’s responsibility is: to either discover beauty or expose the truth.

Thank you to the editors at NetEase for your hard work.
