I'm Hurt, But...

This time, it’s my third time boxing.

Last time, my left chest was still aching a bit. Today, I got hit in the same spot again—felt hard to breathe, just sitting in pain on the ground.

Got hit in the back of my head too. A little bruise on my left forearm, scratches and a lump on my right forearm. A straight hit made my lower lip crash into my teeth, leaving a small bruise.

Even though I’m injured, at least when someone attacked this time, I could look straight at their moves, instead of dodging like the last two sessions. On this point, I even outperformed my muscular opponent.

Though I’ve only boxed three times, here are some thoughts:

  1. Keep your body relaxed, even after getting hurt.
  2. Keep your eyes on the opponent’s moves, concentrate; but don’t just think with your head—think within the attack.
  3. Don’t just focus on the opponent’s two fists and defense zone. Actually, there are many openings for attack. (For me, I’ve noticed over the years I’ve been too pessimistic, always seeing the difficulties but ignoring the opportunities.)
  4. Keep moving. Staying still makes you an easy target.
  5. If your fists can’t reach your opponent, it’s not because your arms aren’t long enough, but because you’re not close enough.
  6. Speed and endurance. Both need to be built up with daily training.
